QUILTERS COME TOGETHER TO HELP CHILDREN IN CRISIS
The fourth Monday of almost every month will find the women of The Norman Area Quilters Guild coming together to
participate in a modern version of the quilting bee. They meet to make quilts and share time with friends. The
difference is that the quilts they make are not for themselves but to meet the needs of the children of this community.
Their quilts are destined for children served by The Mary Abbott House, The Center for Children and Families,
Crossroads Juvenile Detention Center and Ally's House, all organizations that serve children in crisis. Last year, these
quilters distributed 200 quilts, and are inviting others interested in participating to join them in their efforts.
The guild’s Community Quilt Group quilts together from noon to 6 p.m. on the fourth Monday of every month in room
226 at McFarlin Methodist Church, 419 South University Blvd. The guild provides all the fabric and batting for the quilts,
and the participating quilters bring their own sewing machines, thread and notions. Participants do not need to be
guild members, or even experienced quilters to help out. There are plenty of ways for the less experienced to
participate, such as cutting fabric, pressing, pinning quilts together, or sewing on labels or binding.
“It’s all about the fellowship we enjoy,” said Wilma DeBerry, chair of the Community Quilt group. “We talk and trade
stories and laugh. There really is an atmosphere of the old-fashioned quilting bee about our group. It’s a wonderful way
to make new friends and help the children in need while we do what we all love to do.”
Quilters of all skill levels and ages are welcomed. Even quilters who cannot join the group at the monthly meetings are
able to participate. The group prepares fabric and quilt kits for those who want to work from home.
